Lawrence Ferlinghetti, an American poet, painter, book publisher, and co-founder of City Lights Booksellers, turns 92 today. As a publisher, he promoted the work of the Beat Generation, including writers Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac (pictured with Ferlinghetti at right in 1959), Gregory Corso, William S. Burroughs, Michael McClure, and Gary Snyder, among others. Ferlinghetti once said, “Poetry is the shadow cast by our streetlight imaginations.” Happy Birthday, Lawrence!
